American Apparel

The history: American Apparel coined the term Sweatshop-Free in 2002, and has been at the forefront of the movement in integrating manufacturing, distribution and creative processes that keeps their company more efficient than those who rely on offshore or onshore sub-contracting. American Apparel is also committed to sustainability, and have set the precedent for sustainable and ethical manufacturing in California.

Why we love them: These guys aren’t only making the best in basics, and cutting edge style, they are also driving the movement in ethical manufacturing. American Apparel has a smaller carbon footprint than any of their competitors, and recycle almost all their manufacturing waste—an average of 125,000 lbs of textile and 25,000 lbs of paper, plastic and cardboard per week (over 260 semi truck loads per year). As of 2014, they are virtually landfill-free. Who doesn’t love that?
